The residency application is done before the DNM ( Immigration Services).
Before applying , please, make sure that the required documents are presented correctly reason why is recommendable to ask for the assistance of an immigration lawyer in order to avoid delays and unnecessary costs.
Steps:
1- Request an appointment at the DNM. The request should be made a mond ahead of the intended travel date, this is done through a letter to Immigration Services Authorities and a copy of the person's passport.
2- The documents one submits at the DNM must previously stamped at the Uruguayan Consulate in the country where they were issued. This procedure is called "Legalization" (different that "Apostille").
Required Documents:
- Birth Certificate
- The couple's marriage certificate, when the applicant is married.
- Police Record ( Criminal Record)
- The Health Certificate, can be issued by the Uruguayan Health Ministry or one of the authorized private clinics. A basic medical test must be completed, and an immigration lawyer will set the appointment for the applicant. The applicant must bring record of the last tetanus vaccine.
- The Interpol record. The immigration lawyer assisting the applicant will help to request this.
- Proof of Income, proving that the person has a steady stream of income of at least USD 6,000 per year ( USD 500,00 per month). If the applicants are married couple, only one of the spouses needs to prove an income source. Income can be proven by: a pension, a mutual fund, lease income from a property inside or outside Uruguay, salary, etc.
Entering to Uruguay
URUGUAY DOES NOT REQUIRE AN ENTRY VISA FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS, the person will be granted a tourist permit to stay in the country for 90 days.
- Original Passport
- The entry card obtained upon entering Uruguay
- Four passport-size pictures
Citizenship:
After 5 years having filed for residency (three years in the case of a family), one can apply for the citizenship. This is done at Uruguay's Electoral Court.
